South Northamptonshire Council Asks Public to Tackle E-Waste This Festive Season
23 December 2011 - In conjunction with the Weee Connect and European Recycling Platform (ERP), South Northants Council is launching a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of recycling e-waste.
This type of waste includes most electronics, such as washing machines, fridges, televisions and electronic gadgets – anything in fact that has a plug or battery.
E-waste is now the fastest growing waste stream in the UK. Ensuring the public are informed about this recycling problem is particularly important following recent changes to legislation that could mean the UK will have to meet significantly higher e-waste collection rates from 2016.
So far this year, South Northamptonshire Council has collected almost 43 tonnes of e-waste at its household waste recycling centres.
Their campaign is designed to encourage residents in the area to take the opportunity during the post-Christmas lull to clear out their sheds and cupboards and recycle their electronic waste.
The council’s Cllr Dermot Bambridge commented: “We all have broken electricals at home, sitting in the cupboard or garage. Why not have a good clear-out this month and take all broken and unwanted battery-powered items or products with a plug down to the recycling centre?”
