Patent Secured for New MDF Recycling Process

22 December 2011 - The UK’s first MDF recycling plant has edged one step closer following a patent being granted for an innovative new process that has been developed by Macclesfield-based company MDF Recovery.

The process makes use of a technique known as ohmic heating, which is commonly used in large-scale food manufacturing to heat medium density fibreboard (MDF) in order to break down the components that hold the material together.

This allows for the recovery of wood fibre, which MDF Recovery claim is of the same quality as virgin wood fibre and can be used to produce natural thermal insulations or further MDF products.

The company hopes that their new process will be of interest to MDF manufacturers for use in processing their off cuts as well as for retailers and other businesses that generate a large quantity of MDF waste.

Craig Bartlett, Co-Founder of MDF Recovery, commented: “Our process has the potential to revolutionise the management of waste MDF in the UK and globally. It means we can recycle rather than burn this material which is appealing to a lot of people.”
