CNIM and Logan Construction Begin Work on £1bn Waste Energy Plant in Suffolk

19 January 2012 - Northern Ireland firm Lagan Construction and French-based process company CNIM are now commencing work on a £45m contract to build a new waste energy plant near Ipswich.

The contract was awarded by recycling and resource management company SITA UK in October 2010 to the joint venture CNIM/Lagan. This forms part of a wider £1bn deal with Suffolk County Council to develop a facility that will tackle the county’s residual household waste
The CNIM/Lagan project, at Great Blakenham, has an overall construction value of £150m, with the facility expected to be in operation by December 2014.

The new plant will feature a visitor centre, a landscaped wetland area and an on-site ash processing facility.

Suffolk County Council estimates the contract will create savings of £350m in additional expenditure over a 25-year period and a 75,000 tonne reduction of CO2 each year. The plant will also generate sufficient electricity to power 30,000 homes.

Colin Loughran, Lagan Construction Managing Director, commented: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract and look forward to working with our joint venture partner, CNIM, in delivering this state-of-the-art energy from waste facility for SITA UK and Suffolk County Council.”
