Wales Achieves Recycling and Waste Reduction Success

11 January 2012 - The latest quarterly recycling figures for Wales show they have highest reported recycling stats in the UK, at 49%.

In addition, Wales produced 388 thousand tonnes of waste between July and September of 2011, which measures at 5% less waste than the region produced during the same period the previous year.

Welsh Environment Minister John Griffiths commented on the achievement: “I am delighted that the people of Wales are continuing to manage their waste in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner and I congratulate local authorities in Wales for their pivotal part in this success.”

He added: “Not only are we recycling more than ever, we are also reducing the amount of waste produced in the first place. This is good progress and very much in line with the key principle of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’."

Mr Griffiths went on to remind Welsh residents of the importance of building upon their success to meet the challenging target of 70% recycling by 2025 and zero-waste in the year 2050.
