LARAC Asks UK Government to Clarify Waste Management and Prove Green Claims
05 January 2012 - The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) is now asking the Government to live up to its claims that they have are the UK’s Greenest Government ever.
LARAC is asking for improved clarity over political leadership on recycling and has voiced concerns over weekly residual waste collections.
The recycling officers’ organisation would like to know exactly who is in charge of the UK's waste policy, since currently it is not certain whether this lies with the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) or the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
Chair of LARAC, Joy Blizzard, has voice doubt over whether the situation will be properly resolved this year: “I am hoping to see more hands on thinking from the government to deliver on its claims to be the greenest government ever. However I am expecting to see more policy confusion between Defra and the DCLG.”
This issue has been particularly confusing following the recent unveiling of a £250 million fund for weekly waste collections by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles, even though waste is an issue primarily handled by Defra.
