Automated Phone and Gadget Recycling Machines a Possibility for Britons
16 January 2012 - The UK could soon be receiving a new series of automated electronics recycling machines, offering instant cash in exchange for mobile phones and other gadgets.
These types of recycling machines are already available in a number of locations in the United States and are gaining in popularity.
Once a device has been proven to work, users are given an instant quote. Gadgets that are accepted include MP3 players, mobile phones and a range of other products from a database of 4,000 items that can be recycled.
Tom Tullie, Chairman and CEO of EcoATM (the company spearheading the machines) commented: “Almost everyone has a collection of used portable electronics stored somewhere - we believe strongly in repurposing good electronics that can be refurbished and used by consumers in other markets.”
He added: “We find a second life for about 75% of the used devices we collect at the kiosks. For the other 25% of devices that are truly at their end of life, we work with either R2-certified or BAN-certified recyclers who reclaim the raw materials and precious metals in an environmentally responsible way.”
